From the command prompt run dxdiag. One of the tabs will show you what your graphics chip is and how much memory it has.

Age of Pirates Caribbean Tales

The original retail disk release was as an Age of Pirates title,
the later digital GOG or steam releases were as a Sea Dogs title.
(Steam or GOG distributions should have the latest game patch build
included and updated installers)

Apart from say loading screen title changes and
DRM removal for the GOG version, and added
Steam DRM for Steam, essentially still the same game.

Retail disk Starforce DRM will not work with Windows 10,
Replacement NoCD Executable required to bypass Starforce.

Depending on how the game detects DirectX 9C,
it may be looking for a specific filename
which may not be present in Windows 10.

(known issue with old game installers and bugged
DirectX detection routines physically checking for specific files
which may no longer be present with later OS versions,
and ignoring Microsoft's preferred way of querying DirectX
for the level of functionality available.
GOG or Steam distributions should have updated installers.)

It may help to run the retail game installer in
"compatibility mode" for Win XP-SP3 when installing
the game. This is a Win XP 2006 vintage game.

Windows 10 DirectX 12 emulates Directx 9C
(as well as DirectX 10 & 11)
so should not be be required to install it.

Try running the retail game without installing DirectX 9c
or with say Win XP-SP3 Compatability mode set
and see if that works, as a last resort install DirectX 9c.

The DirectX 9c included with the game disk may now be
outdated and the Microsoft web based installer may not
work correctly, probably complaining about the OS version.

Probably best to use the DirectX 9C full installer, link is below

DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109

Version: 9.29.1974
File Name: directx_Jun2010_redist.exe
Date Published: 4/18/2011
File Size: 95.6 MB

EDIT:
Microsoft DirectX 9C hosting link now works again

a google search on say
DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010)

will give some hits such as

https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/directx-end-user-runtimes-(june-2010).html
directx_Jun2010_redist-[Guru3D.com].zip

https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/DirectX-9.0c-Redistributable.shtml
directx_Jun2010_redist.exe

---------------------------------

I ran into the know issue with retail disk Sid Meier Pirates
failing to startup with a DirectX Error.

Retail Pirates buggy Autodetect resolution changer wrote an
incorrect resolution to the config.ini file.
(Comptability issues with retail game resolution changer
and modern graphics cards)

As part of the troubleshooting installed DirectX 9c
in Windows 10 which installed okay and haven't
noticed any further DirectX issues.
(Pirates did work under Windows 10 Emulated DirectX 9c previously)

Finally fixed the Pirates problem by editing the config.ini file
with a correct resolution.
(DirectX 9 was reporting an invalid resolution but
cryptically suggested it was a DirectX 9C issue
which it wasn't)

Thank you corasair. I'm a bit hesitant to install idrect x 9c. But i did run into this last night

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/apps_windows_10-winapps-appscat_social/requires-directx-9-when-i-have-directx12/a9206caa-71a3-4f64-a9e0-a521e210142f?auth=1

Seems to be fine loading direct x 9c and keeping your install of direct x 12 at the same time

Retail disk Starforce DRM will not work with Windows 10
as blocked by Microsoft from loading by design.
Replacement NoCD Executable required to bypass Starforce.
Try gamecopyworld dot com A - Age of Pirates
(ensure you match the game patch build version)

Alternatively GOG or Steam Sea Dogs game distributions do NOT include Starforce DRM.

Star Force Removal tool (pre-dates windows 10)

Confirm your graphics Chipset meets the minimum game Graphics requirements.

Update only?

If using a NoCD replacement executable, it may be helpful to keep a
copy of the original game executable, say rename it so you can't run it by accident.

Some game patches may check for an original executable and fail to install if not found. Putting back the original executable may be best practice prior to upgrading the game with an offical patch.
Also source a matching build updated NoCD replacement executable.
Use only the NoCD to run the game.

The CD came with either 1,41 or 1.42, i'm positive. I updated it to 1.50. Someone at another forum suggested upgrading Star force before getting rid of it. If it still doesn't work upgraded ill run the uninstaller program. Thank you corsair

More info on upgrading Starforce is here
http://www.star-force.com/support/drivers/

some background info here

Windows Vista/7/8 update prevents some old CD-ROM games run
http://www.hookedonpirates.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7775
(Windows 10 also covered)

Citing security issues, Microsoft disables Safedisc DRM. But users can make old games work again at their own risk.

Also apples to similiar DRM disk schemes such as Starforce or Securerom

Microsoft blocked disk DRM schemes via Windows updates for Win 7 or 8
(which can be uninstalled)
and this blocking is included as part of the core design of Windows 10 so any Starforce upgrade unlikely to work for Windows 10.

Starforce has such a notorious reputation, wouldn't want any
part of it on any PC personal system anyway.

Back in the day, enraged Users were threatening a Class action lawsuit
over damage to optical drives (DVD-roms or CD-Rom Drives)
alleging caused by Starforce.
Game publishers rapidly dropped Starforce in response
for future game releases to fend off any Starforce DRM games boycott.
The Starforce name became extremely toxic in PC gaming circles.

Starforce themselves denied all, but were never able to
provide a convincing explanation of the optical drive damage
(other than Starforce) suffered in connection with Starforce DRM games.

(I can personally confirm the optical drive damage
as a personal DVD-Rom and CD-Burner drives had to be replaced
with Starforce DRM the prime suspect and it is best avoided)

Are you saying i should just uninstall it? Star force came with the CD Version of Age of pirates, it installed itself.

What do you mean working at my own risk? Yoo mean updating starforce or uninstalling it?
