A Painted Ocean WIP Game (2019)

https://thapen.itch.io/painted-ocean

Sailing man-of-war simulator,
In development.

Command a Napoleonic-era man-of-war. Sail the oceans of the world.

Author Neil Thapen
Made with Unity, GIMP, Audacity, Wings3D

Featuring

Square-rig sailing physics
The whole world to sail in, with a year of real winds and weather
Frigate vs frigate battles

Your ship is HMS Alpha, a 38-gun 18-pounder frigate (rather like this one) of around 2000 tons displacement, with a 150-foot hull and a crew of 300.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Lively_(1804)

This is a release of an unfinished project

What is done is the simulation of the ship, the control system, the world, basic weather and combat. There are unlikely to be any major new features added, but see the devlog for plans for the future.

How to play

There are three options at the main menu screen.

Harbour. This is a mostly-enclosed space in which to try out maneuvering with sails. Open the tutorial window (from a button at the bottom left of the screen) to get started.

Battle. Two frigates, broadside to broadside. You can control both ships - press tab to switch between them.

The World. This starts you at the Canary islands, well-placed to sail to the Americas or towards the Indian ocean. Or you can open the map and ctrl+click to teleport anywhere. The buttons at the bottom right control your rate through and position in time. There is accurate seasonal weather.

Known issues

Expect to see some placeholder graphics and UI elements, debug menus etc.
The physics can be glitchy, especially for falling spars
The sea occasionally disappears in rough weather
Teleport sometimes doesn't go quite where you click
Hold down shift as you start the game to open a menu to change resolution

How the ship handles is a mix of best-guesses and hacky physics. I'm happy to hear suggestions on how it could be improved.

Version 0.5a released

In this version:

The sailing model is tuned to match historical performance, at least in low to moderate winds.
Wind now affects the spars and hull, not just the sails.
Spars and sails do not break so quickly - you are now at more of a risk of being blown over.
There are preset sail plans, which change automatically during fast travel.
(Some) coastal towns are shown on the map.
There is a button to show wind arrows on the map.
There's an indicator on the compass for wind veering or backing.

Sail plans - these are rather simplistic. There are six or so preset plans. Under time acceleration, they change automatically depending just on the wind speed. If you are before the wind, the plan is the same but with nothing on the mizzenmast and with the maincourse hauled up. Be warned that the way the damage system is now, I have seen courses blown off under the automatic setting (the damage needs more tweaking).

Towns - these are meant to give a flavour of the world around 1800. I have tried to get a town every couple of hundred miles, in densely populated areas.

A Painted Ocean
HMS Alpha frigate is apparently based on

HMS Lively
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Lively_(1804)

HMS Lively was a 38-gun fifth rate frigate of the Royal Navy

Lead ship of the Lively class of 18-pounder frigates.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lively-class_frigate

It was probably the most successful British frigate design of the Napoleonic Wars, to which fifteen more sister ships would be ordered between 1803 and 1812.

Another Lively Class ship was

HMS Macedonian
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Macedonian

Captured by the USS United States 25 October 1812.
Served as USS Macedonian. Broken up 1834.
