I wonder if anyone could design the historical accurate flags for the four colonial powers. Unfortunately, I don´t even know how they looked like. Pirates!, Pirates! Gold, PotC (without mods), PotC (with build 12) and the latest Pirates! all use(d) different colors.

Historical accurate flags of other european nations would be appreciated too.

here i found a collection of spanish flags:
http://www.fotw.us/flags/es_his.html

but i don't know which flags they actually used on ships back in 1600 ...

this link of the same site is even better: here you can choose a country and can see flags then. for most countries there are also historical flags available...

Okay, I made four historical accurate flags, one for each nation, and managed to overwrite the original ship flags simply by placing them in the custom folder (they have the same name like the original flags). So far so good. But how do I get these flags displayed for the towns? They still use the original colors and that looks kind of odd. Sad

Edit: If someone likes these, feel free to download.

Edit: Uploaded final version of my flagpack.

That flag post dates Pirates! buy about 200 years. The actual Spanish ensign was this:

Though it also appears that this next flag was the flag used by vessels operating in American waters during the entire Pirates! period:

I would say either one would be appropriate for the game.

The English flag in the game is the one most English shipping would have used in the 1600 era. After 1606 (so you could even use this flag for the 1600 era too for all intents and purposes) the naval ensign would have changed to something very similar to today's Union Jack. I would say to use this one for the 1620 period:

One possible exception might be to remove the white border from the red St. George's Cross. I am not sure of the history of that but I have seen old British flags with a blue field and a plain red cross and plain white X behind it.

After 1634, English merchant shipping would have begun to use this one:

For France, I would probably go with a plain white flag for 1600 and 1620 games (no joke intended about the French and their heart for battle - no one questioned French spirit in the 17th century - this really was the French royal navy ensign):

Followed by this one for 1640 and later:

In reality, the French merchants would have used this flag:

But were permitted to run up the royal white flags to command respect from other shipping (they all acted as if they were royalty). So I would use the white flag and the white with fleur-de-lis, depending on era.

That flag is a 20th century invention. To quote that same page, "Naval jack. Before 1931 a small version of the national flag was used as naval jack." That means this flag would be the best one to use for 1600 and 1620s games:

After which they began changing the orange stripe to red in the 1630s so then for 1640 and after you could change it to:

Thanks for the info, Fab. Smile Are you sure the Union Jack was already used in the 17th century? After browsing the FOTW sites I thought the English used the red, blue or white ensign (that´s why I chose the red one above) in this era.

Man, I'm always a day late and a dollar short. This time I was six minutes short. Sorry Davos. Wasn't trying to steal your thunder. I just didn't hit the Submit button early enough. Wink

I agree with you on the flags especially if you don't want to have to swap out one set of flags for another depending on what era you play in. The ones you chose represent the core of what we're after considering that the flags changed so much during the period.

The Union Jack flag I showed would have been used on all British shipping from 1606 when King James of Scotland became King James of England, but in the 1634 he declared the Union Jack off limits for non-royal ships, so merchant shipping began using the red ensign.

What I wish we could have is different flags for merchant shipping versus navy vessels. There's no way to show that Royal Navy ships in 1640 have one flag while merchants have another. So you pick one or the other and run with it.

Also, to note, if someone figures out where the town flags are kept and figures a way to change them, don't use the flags above. None of them are flags of state. For that I would recommend this one for Spain:

And this for France:

England and The Netherlands would be the only ones to use the naval ensign as their state flag.

I am an amateur historian, not a flag scholar by any means, and if someone who knows more can make a correction to anything I've said, I welcome the correction.

Thanks for the clarification. Smile I already downloaded the other variants in your post and a bunch of other flags. I just need them resized and converted into DDS files and upload them to my webspace.

It should be possible but I haven´t looked through the FPK files yet. The city flags must be in one of these files. It´s nice to be able to have different flags for ships and the cities. If someone finds out where they are located, let me know.

I completed and uploaded my historical flagpack above.

Real nice looking, Davos. I made my own set when I came home from work, but then I see you already did that! I do like that texture you used. How did you get it and what program did you use for the editing?

I used Gimp for Windows. The LE had a plain white flag with the structure all other original flags have. I inverted that one, made it a bit brighter, copied and pasted the adjusted flags that I found on the net on top of the structure flag (gave it a layer of its own), set its layer mode to Grain Merge and finally merged the two layers.
