so can anyone see anything wrong with this picture?

In the _h.bmp files you can change the height of the different landscapes. (each color represents a height)
in the lanscape.ini.txt file you can add new landscapes and move them and also alot of other things.
Not very useful cause I think the landscape are correct but it was fun to test it out.
btw. Does anyone know a place where I can upload pics and directlink to them? '

A great discovery, DJ1! At least I did not know that yet...
Now, if we can also change the locations of the towns, someone could really make a sort of a fantasy map setting for the game. Might be nice to have some other seas to sail once in a while.
I guess changing the appearance of the islands would be harder, given that they are all composed of three different layer images... _________________ It is much better to be armed with a sword that has two edges than with an estoc [...], which is nothing more than a stick with a point. Looks like somebody has started the path that will lead to changing the map.
Big hairy download to change the complete game setting.
Nice job. |

No.
I just had changed the name on Guadelope Channel in the text.txt file where you can change most names in the game. such as townnames, text on sea, trading stuff names etc.
I couldnt come up with anything to write so I just pressed the keyboard in whatever way. |

?
What do you mean?
a problem about the map.
I have noticed that when I sail on the land on my maked island It ask me if I wanna anchor. (I can sail on the island)
However the computer ships just sails through it like it wasnt there. |

hmm. interesting.
Looks like the map is pretty complicated - ther's about 6 files for each landmass (height, texture, normal map, coastline data, etc). I'll try moving some around when I get the chance. |

Reopening this thread after a long time.
The geography of SMP is organized by island groupings (58 in all). There are 12 files for each grouping (occasionally 13). Each grouping can be a single island large or small, a group of very small islands, or a chunk of coastline.
_h.bmp
Sets the height of land/depth of water.
This determines where your landing party can walk around and where your ship can sail.
_cc.bmp
Sets the type/color of trees that disappear when you walk up to them.
_trees.nif
Creates 3d multicolored trees that don't disappear when you walk up to them and are visible from the sea
_b.tga
Sets ground cover color/type (rock/beach/grass/water)
Affects where you can beach the ship
If edited, must be saved with alpha channel (otherwise SMP crashes),
but the content of the alpha channel doesn't matter.
_n.tga
Sets shadows/highlights.
Must be saved without an alpha channel
_b.tga.bhi
This is a binary file rather than a graphical file
It affects where you can land the ship.
If this file is the wrong size for a given island, SMP crashes
_ch.bmp
_cs.bmp
_t.bmp
These files appear to do nothing - I blanked out the maps and saw no effect in the game. It may be that they were used to construct the maps above that do the real work.
_s.dat
This is a text file that seems to be defining line segments connecting
points in the square (0,0) - (1,1). Doesn't affect SMP if blanked out.
_caustics.nif
_s.nif
These files appear to do nothing; I copied the versions from a small island to Trinidad and saw no effect.
_h.tga
Very rare
The bmp and tga files can be opened in a graphics editor like GIMP, but be careful with the tga files; if you save them with the wrong settings, the game will crash or hang.
I don't know what places walk-through geysers or walk through trees that do not disappear when you walk though them. Those 3d items are all not visible from the sea, and are probably specified using the 462x293 grid format used for treasure map landmarks.
Intriguingly, Bermuda is fully specified. |

But you can't actually land on Bermuda, can you? |
