i know cheating spoils all fun with games but i do cheat with the maps searching for relatives, monty's hideout and the lost indian cities. pirate treasures do not need to be cheated on since they are quite easy.

i follow the course of the game until i meet raymondo the first time (for the first part of my sisters map). before the fight i save the game. if i do get a piece of map without a waterline i reload and refight until i have a complete map.

then i follow the game until i have information about him again. as soon i know his whereabouts i save the game as game #1. then i sink all my ships except my flagship the royal sloop and sail after him disregarding all other ships. if he is not in the city i plunder a ship or get to the tavern, hear where he left to and reload my game to sail straight to the city where he is heading to and wait for him there.

once he is in sight i save again as game #2 and blow his ship in pieces (no need to plunder), board and get a second piece of the map. i do a screenshot and save it in paintbrush. then i reload game #2, refight until i get a different piece of the map. that one also goes into paintbrush. reload again, fight again until i have the 3rd missing piece of the map in paintbrush.

Pirates! by the way is fine using ALT+TAB to jump into other application without crashing. now i use paintbrush and with cutting and pasting i get one complete map.

i reload game #1 and continue with my fleet and a complete map (in paintbrush but still an accurate map). i have saved a year or two because i tracked raymondo down once instead of four times.

off i go to my sisters cabin. before i kick in the door i save and reload until i get a piece with a waterline.

i continue playing the game in a normal manner until i get news from my uncle, fight raymondo (until i get a piece with a waterline). when i hear about raymondo again for the 2nd piece of my uncles map i save again as number #1 then go after him in the same manner until i have a complete map.

then i do NOT rescue my uncle. i just go there and save in front of the cabin (as game #15) and reload and kick in the door again and again until i have a complete map of monty's hideout in paintbrush. i now reload game #1 and go straight for the hideout. that way i have 100,000 gold and 8 specialists quite early in the game (and i fight him while i am still young and healthy).

meanwhile the game has come to the point where i dance with some beautiful governors daughter. again, before entering the city i save and dance. i reload and re-dance until i have a perfect dance and get a part of the inca city with coastline. then i save as number #1. i sink my ships except the fastest and go to the place where my uncle is. i save the game as game #15 when in front of the cabin and reload, rekick in the door until i have the inca map complete. then i load game #1 and straight from the governor i can go for the inca city.

the same applies for the other indian cities; i get a first piece of the map with a waterline - then save the game and use my uncle's cabin to complete it.

very early in the game you have 8 specialists, 100,000 gold from monty and 4x50,000 gold from the indians making your crew very happy and you can focus on your career as a pirate without being bothered by raymondos any more.

Well, that is going too far for me, but normally once I know what city it is by I can find them, especially if there is a water landmark...er watermark?

Agree, I do something similar to this, but once I have the red x, I save and refight only to find out what city it's by, or the watermark, but I don't paste to Paintbrush, I just jot it down and sail there. Of course the best thing is to play the Spanish, and have the governor of Santiagos daughter tell you he is in Santiago, and then just walk over to the tavern and get him.

Sounds like more trouble than its worth. It would seem that even the 'greenest' pirate will have little trouble finding the map pieces. It is not that hard. You have about 30-35 years of quality plundering to get all the maps.

to be honest i find it hard to get a treasure if you have no water at all on the map. i only use the strategy to have all the raynaldos and montalabans from the map in the beginning. i can fight them while i am still young and i get a nice starting money and specialist crew so i never have to divide plunder.

maybe i described it too complicated. bottom line is: if you have a family member to be rescued and know his/her whereabouts - do not rescue them. get one map piece through dancing. then save the game and you can complete the whole map using your family member (without a fight, dance etc.). once you have the hideout and the four cities you complete the game in the usual manner.
