I lost the game in a computer crash and just reinstalled both versions - the '87 from a Commodore 64 fan site, and the 04 from CD after finding the KEY. |
Greetings Allronix.
I to go back to the C=64 days - in fact I still have it - along with the C=64 version - and PC Pirates Gold - and Now the 04 version of Pirates - on my PC though
Do you still play the C=64 version ? on your 64 - or on a PC Emulator. _________________

Yes, actually. I play retro games a lot, part from childhood nostalgia and part because it's fascinating to see how much early programmers could do with so few resources.
The 87 version has some features I sorely miss from the 04 version, such as the Silver Train and a greater variety of backgrounds and starting ships. The manual was also a work of art, too - so much detail in it you could use it for a history book, almost! _________________ "Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang'd like a dog."

Welcome, Allronix, to Cutlass Isle!
I have a copy of Pirates! for my C-64 Emulator, but it won't let me load my saved games!
But, in general, those good old games are a lot of fun- although I suspect my growing up with them might make them seem a little better than they really are...for some of them, anyway... _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;

Some of it is nostalgia. I've many fond memories of managing the manual, maps, and a notebook while my twin took the controls. She had a better reaction time for swordplay and gunnery. I had a better sense of direction, was better with maps, and had a memory for details like who was at war with who and which nearby cities had a garrison we could nail.
Some of it is looking back on it with a technician's eye and being fascinated by how designers could make so much out of so little in terms of resources. Modern games can put a lot of punch into visuals and sound, but sometimes lose track of the bread and butter gameplay. It's why I'm a big Bioware fan these days. Those guys can tell a STORY and have awesome characters.
With the 87 version, the manual was not just instructional, it was a great read, too. I also liked its tendency to mine history, which sent us to the library to learn more about what the heck Sid was talking about. (The twin's just finished her Library Science degree, but even as kids, we loved our research). _________________ "Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang'd like a dog."

That's all true, Allronix. What impresses me also is how much these programmers could squeeze out of a few kilobytes of programming.
If true genius is the art of getting the most out of simple effects, then there have been many designers of genius who made the 80s great... _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;

Hello fellow pirates!
Been playing the game for ages and also been lurking around HOP (back when it was called Cutlass Isle), but only just registered.
I'm amazed that this forum is still pretty active after all this time!
The addicted to pirates forum is almost dead by comparison...
In a few choice words: Name's Martin, currently living in the US, huge fan of all things piratey and age of sail - Monkey Island, of course Pirates! (though I never managed to make Pirates Gold work properly on the new machine, so haven't played that in a decade) as well as POB (just bought me the whole Aubreyad!) and HH.
I've also been toying with, collecting and thinking about mods and have a rather large project on my mind... stay tuned! |

Arr! Welcome to the Isle, MCSmarties!
I have to warn ye, there's a rascally Knave around here, who won't admit he's a pirate- he calls himself a privateer- even though he does all the things that pirates do. Keep a weather eye open for him...

Ah, so you were one of those mysterious lurkers. But now you are one of us!

A hearty yar of welcome to ye, Genghis Hank!
Polishing off yer captain's papers, say ye?
I hope that yer log records that you had a fine time upon your arrival here at Cutlass Isle!
I always find my sojourns here to be profitable- like most anywhere, it's the people that make the place great! _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;

Ahoy, Everybody!
I'm a hungarian pirate and you might ask - how can this be? Hungary doesn't have sea at all... Yep, I must sail every time along the Danube river 'till the Black Sea if I want to see big masses of water. Arrrr... The bridges are breaking me masts always... So I decided to sail wheeled ships instead - sometimes they have more than 4 wheels. And besides, we actually have sea! The Hungarian Sea named Balaton. It is small and narrow but it is ours (actually: a lake). You should pay a visit someday! _________________ May the Wind of Force be with you! |
