Fluyt for a Flagship Challenge Rules

The rules to this challenge are quite simple:

1. Playing at ROGUE level, obtain a fluyt.

2. Use it to pirate in.

3. All combat must be performed in this vessel.

4. All improvements are legal.

5. Play the Buccaneer Heroes era; 1660.

6. All classes of this ship may be used.

    a. Fluyt
    b. Large Fluyt
    c. West Indiaman

(You don't have to do the entire challenge in one ship as long as the ship you use is a fluyt of some sort.)

7. Retire when you think you've won.

8. All entries must be in by December 31st.

Don't sell this ship short! A fully-upgraded West Indiaman is adequate for attacking any commercial shipping. With some skill, pirate hunters won't be much of a problem. Even Monte and Reynoldo can be defeated with a quick boarding! It's doubtful the fluyt will offer the needed firepower to run and gun. The West Indiaman carries 100 crew, without hammocks, and 16 guns, which are more than adequate for a pirate's purposes. Initially, the going may be a bit sluggish, but with copper bottoms and cotton sails, things pick up a bit. Avoiding long sailing journeys may be a key to this challenge. Relying on swordsmanship may be another.

To present your entry to the judge: Save your game to a particular slot...any one but slot 1. Look in My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Pirates! and you'll find it there. E-mail your entry to airsaw@comcast.net by attaching it as a file. Those who wish may enter screenshots. If you don't have a screenshot program you can download Wisdom-soft's ScreenHunter 4.0 (for free) here:

http://www.cambio.net/setupscreenhunterfree.exe

Save it to your desktop, then run the executable to install it. Any questions about how to use it, I'll gladly answer. I suggest you configure it to capture the entire screen using the .jpg format. You can create a folder to put your screenies in, and this program will put them in it for you. You can also select a prefix name - name001.jpg, name002.jpg - and it will name your shots in sequence for you. I suggest you use your Cutlass Isle nick. If you have two names, i.e. Deadeye Dick, use deadeye_dick to name your screenies.

You will then need a place to put your screenshots. An oft' used, and free service, for that is PhotoBucket at http://photobucket.com/ I don't know much about the technicalities of this, but you will have an upload ability and an address where your screenies can be found. Send screenshot entries by sending your URL where your screenies are kept. You will need a screenshot of:

    a. Your status screen at retirement. (Be sure you get this before that last divvy!)
    b. Your retirement screen.
    c. Your fleet status screen.

It's probably easier to just send the slot file via e-mail.

PRIZES

    1st Prize 5,000 gold
    2nd Prize 2,500 gold
    3rd Prize 1,000 gold
    4th Prize finely-carved tombstone

Refer any questions, complaints or extra gold to Airsaw.
He's in charge. ARGH! Very Happy

What happens if ye finish in 5th place or below? Does that mean your tombstone isn't finely carved or that it's perhaps just a lump of rock with ye name scribbled on it? Shocked

When you sign up for photo bucket its very easy to up-load your picture. Also they provide 3 different links under the picture to make it easy for you to copy and then paste the link.

The links provided do different things, from making a clickable image to just a link where the image is displayed. So photo bucket should work out very well. Wink

What difficulty level is this challenge to be played at? And what are the victory criteria?

ROGUE

As asked earlier, when you say who gets the most, you are refering to Fame points or vessels captured or? I would think your ability to dance and find buried treasure, etc. etc. would have very little to do with the style of vessel used but would heavily influence the fame points gained. It seems to me that the nature of this challenge is in the vessel used (Fluyt) and that would make things like vessels captured the object of this challenge.

Just my 2 cents...

not beneficial as contests are traditionally posted in this forum.

Tradition or not, I think the other forum gets more traffic, especially from the new people. It will be more visable there.

technically speaking it shouldn't matter which of the forums it is in, 'cause when you log on you get a message of how many new posts have been made and then people are being made aware of all this... plus there is a link to this thread on the front page too.

Still not sure what exactly I'm aiming for... Question

Pirate hunters are a real pain in the ass when you're in a great hulking Fluyt!

It will become a moot question if a separate contest forum is implemented - a possibility that was mentioned recently.

When you say 'retire when you think you've won' how would you have an idea that you might have? What is the main goal? Fame, money, ships sunk, etc. I have an itchy feeling this question has already been asked... Question

I haven't played at Rogue before, this should be an interesting thing to try. I'll probably have to drop out though Wink Laughing
